Joseph Nicholas Streit, of Oak Lawn, IL passed away Sunday January 12, 2025 after fighting a hard battle with Multiple Myeloma and Myeloid Cancers. Born November 19, 1955, he was the third child of Nicholas G. Streit and Dorothy (Koenigsfeld) Streit’s four children. He grew up in Oak Lawn, and was proud to say he always lived there. He attended St. Germaine and McDonald grammar schools, and Oak Lawn Community High School. After graduating he began working at the Post Office, a job he would work at different locations for over 35 years. After retiring from the post office, Joe enjoyed volunteering and later working at the Children’s Museum in Oak Lawn, a job he later passed on to his daughter. Joe married his wife Kathy, who he met through Chicago Catholic Singles, in May of 1985. They lived together in Oak Lawn, where they welcomed their only child Amy in September of 1989. Throughout his life Joe was an avid Green Bay Packers and Chicago Cubs Fan, and loved watching his teams. He also enjoyed being active in his church through choir, Holy Name Society, and Knights of Columbus where he was a Fourth Degree Knight. Joe was also involved in the fathers club at Mother McAuley High School, Chicago Area Holy Name Society, and through theatre programs at Struggles, 99th Street Summer Theatre, and later Hale Park through the Chicago Park District. Joe also loved spending time with his family, friends, and all those that he knew and loved.Joe was preceded in death by his father Nicholas G. Streit, Kathy’s parents Jeanne (Haener) and James Foody, and his brothers-in-law Jim Foody and Walter “Mickey” Foody, as well as many loved aunts and uncles. He is survived by his wife Kathy and daughter Amy, as well as his mother Dorothy, siblings Diane (Perry) Steinhandler, Susan (Terrence) Finn, and Nicholas F. (Lisa) Streit, brothers and sisters in law Mary Bray, Jeanne (Edward) Galzan, and Nancy Foody, his nieces and nephews Tracy (Rene) Gonzalez, Zachary (Laura) Steinhandler, Rebecca Finn (Zane Kenney), Natalie (Daniel) Thorstensen, Daniel (Stephanie) Finn, Michael Finn, Ava VanDommelen, Shane VanDommelen, Ben (Dominique Giancarlo) Bray, Sam (Emilie) Bray, David (Frankie) Foody, Michael (Hilary) Foody, Megan (Alex) Pappas and Danny (Laura Turk) Foody; and loving great uncle of Griffin, Gage, and Gustavo Gonzalez, Max, Ella, and Charlie Steinhandler, Samuel and Jacob Thorstensen, Cayden, Barrett, and Wyatt Finn, and Ollie and Charlie Bray, and Cillian.
Visitation will occur Thursday, January 16 from 3:00 pm until 8:00 pm at Thompson & Kuenster Funeral Home, 5570 W. 95th Street in Oak Lawn. Funeral Services will be Friday, January 17th at 9:45 from Thompson & Kuenster, to St. Gerald Church for Mass at 10:30 am. Interment to follow at St. Mary’s Cemetery.
